The Challenge

The client, DHL Aviation NV, was planning to upgrade the air and road operations control room at their busy Brussels Airport hub. Having recently completed control rooms for DHL sites in Cincinnati and Prague, DHL NV came to Evans with a solid idea of what they were looking for and the confidence in Evans ability to handle their requirements.

DHL's main goal in this room upgrade was to improve space utilization and to streamline communication between the operations staff. The paradigm shift began by opening the space up and removing the existing workstation walls. As operational communication improved, the need for new consoles to enhance this working arrangement and organize the clutter and equipment became clear.

"One of the challenges", says Mr. Jacek Romanowski, Director Network Control, "was that we were bound by the area of the building. The biggest problem was the space constraints. We simply had no choice but to work within those."

In addition, the project schedule was absolutely critical. DHL had clearly defined timelines that Evans had to meet- their control room had to be 100% operational before the hectic holiday season.

The Evans Solution

The new console configuration proposed by Evans was designed to promote ease of communication, and allow operators to view the proposed larger screens at the front of the control room.

Evans recommended a Strategy? open desktop solution arranged in three reversed curved rows in order to maximize the number of operators in the minimum amount of space. The Strategy? slatwall was extended to 18" above the desktop, creating a suitable environment for DHL?s large flat screen monitors yet still maintaining operator sightlines to the larger displays. The slatwall also added a sense of privacy to the workstation without restricting interaction.

Finally, the Evans team met the tight on-site deadline, fully completing the project within the customer's defined schedule.

"The consoles had to be installed on a weekend (so as to not interfere with day-to-day activities) and had to be ready to operate by December 1st", says Mr. Romanowski. "The project team worked very hard together and we just made it, as it was successfully installed the last weekend in November."

Needless to say, DHL was very satisfied with the end result. ?The operators are no longer space confined the way they used to be. It was a picture perfect process and it worked out very well for all of us. But the key thing is really that the staff is very happy with the new consoles and in the new environment. In addition, they are fully portable if we relocate to a new facility and expandable if we need to increase the number of operators.?

"?We are very proud now to show off our control room with our new consoles coupled with our new technology here at DHL. It's just a whole different environment" beamed Mr. Romanowski.
