The Challenge
Petro Rabigh is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and Sumitomo Chemical. The two multinationals teamed up and developed a 3,000-acre oil refinery, located in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia, on the shore of Red Sea. This US$10 billion plant is the largest integrated oil refinery and petrochemical production facility ever built, and one of the most sophisticated plants of its kind in the world.
One of the largest challenges in this project was creating a solution that was acceptable to the seven different user groups that are active in the control room. Each of these groups has unique requirements in terms of equipment mounting, amount of equipment, control buttons, etc, to the extent that a unique design had to developed for each user group.
The Evans Solution
Shortly after Petro Rabigh approached Evans for the consoles for this new refinery, it became evident that the client was looking to step away from the conventional enclosed consoles they had used in the past. Evans developed an increased-depth Strategy solution that was able to house all of the required equipment, while offering a cost-effective solution. Prototypes were built and shipped to the plant for review and based on the feedback of all seven user groups, a unique solution was developed for every group. In February 2008, two years after the initial talks between Petro Rabigh and Evans, the phased installation of this project was completed. A total of 49 Strategy desks, seven conference tables and seven map tables were manufactured for this project.
