The Challenge

The client, Georgia Power, is the largest of four electric utilities that make up Southern Power, currently serves over 2.25 million customers and has been providing power in Georgia for over a century.

Georgia Power came to Evans to help them in providing a console solution for its transmission control center. The biggest challenge with their requirements was simply the complexity and interaction of the various operators with each other and various critical AV displays. Within the one control room, Georgia Power had 3 groups of operators - each with specific sightline requirements to 7 different display walls and each requiring sight and voice communications within each group.

It was crucial that this complex interaction between users needed to be considered and accommodated in any control room layout and console design by Evans.

The Evans Solution

Because of the importance of ensuring maximum operator communication and sightlines in this complex environment, the Evans team came back to the client with 8 different conceptual designs in order to explore and address the very best possible solution for the client. After much discussion and consultation, the client was able to choose that perfect solution to meet their needs.

The "perfect solution" for Georgia Power included designing dual operator position consoles to maximize operator communication and viewing of shared display technology. And in terms of room layout, these multiple dual operator positions were configured in 3 different groups that were all meticulously aligned to ensure proper ergonomic sightlines to the group's respective display areas of responsibility.

All aspects of the operators' daily interaction and responsibilities were taken into consideration to provide the optimal console solution and control room layout. And to cap it all off, Evans' millwork specialists custom-manufactured circular rotating binder storage units with tambour doors to completely finish the aesthetics and functionality of the transmission control center.
