The Challenge

The client, Baltimore Gas & Electric Company (BGE), serves more than one million business and residential electric customers and more than 600,000 gas customers in Central Maryland. BGE came to Evans when it was looking to install twenty ergonomic sit-stand consoles in its recently renovated control room center, as well as two training room consoles in the viewing gallery.

Every project is unique, and comes with its unique challenges. This project in particular provided Evans with exciting challenges. The revamped control room center had to be equipped for a number of different user groups. Large amounts of equipment had to be installed in the consoles, while keeping sightlines, accessibility, and ergonomics in mind.

The two different departments that would be working in the control room had their own monitor walls, supervisors, ergonomic requirements, and accessibility requirements. Evans had to work closely with the customer's architect, ergonomic consultants, end-user, management and facility groups in order to ensure that all the individual needs were met.

The Evans Solution

Evans developed a prototype of one of the consoles. After the client had come to Evans' factory to view & approve the prototype it was installed in the actual control room in Baltimore. The client placed all desired equipment on the console, allowing the various user groups to extensively test the console. Based on recommendations of the parties involved, the product was adapted to the final customer needs.

The consoles had to be equipped with up to ten monitors, one substantially large phone, two keyboards, a radio, a task light, Johnson Control Personal Environment Unit, convenience outlets, up to six CPU's, a radiant heater, and ample personal storage space.

Evans was able to equip all consoles with the desired equipment, provide ample room for cabling, and keep the critical sightlines, ergonomics, and user group accessibility in mind. The BGE project is an excellent demonstration of Evans' capacity and flexibility to work with the client on a personal level, and provide satisfying solutions for demanding mission critical environments.
